What is lampwork? Lampwork beads are made by melting glass rods over the flame of a torch. It is a specialized form of art that takes many hours of practice and patience to master. Each bead may take the artist up to an hour or more to create. Once it is finished the glass must be slowly cooled in the controlled environment of a kiln. This process is called annealing and is essential otherwise the bead would crack from cooling too fast on the outside while the center is still very hot. Properly annealing insures that the glass is strong and durable for everyday use in jewelry and many other objects of art. If you ever have a chance to watch a glass artist in action you will be amazed at what they can create with rods of glass and a flame!
Where do you get your beads? I get most of them on ebay at auction. Since most beaded jewelry makers appreciate the fine art of handmade lampwork beads the bidding can get very competetive but I get right in there and enjoy the battle over beads! Some of my favorite artists have websites where I can get some beads but even then the best ones go really fast! Check out my links page to see some of the websites!
